The End of the Workday When Work Is Everywhere

Remote work did not remove the need for boundaries; it made them invisible. Without an office door, the end of the day has to be designed.

Give the day a closing ritual

Pick a small action that means “done”: a walk around the block, closing the laptop, or writing tomorrow’s first task. The action matters less than doing it consistently.

Separate the rooms

If work happens where you relax, your brain keeps scanning for unfinished tasks. A dedicated desk, a different chair, or even a lamp that only turns on for work can create a boundary.

Make the default offline

Turn off notifications at the system level, not just per app. Willpower is a poor filter for a device designed to interrupt.
